Chances are, there will be no common theme for posts…so here we go.

I initially started this site as a way to live blog a road trip to Montreal that involved a 12-passenger van, 7 friends, and a lot of weird. The trip ended, but cleanliness remains.

Ray Finkle and a Clean Pair of Shorts

foursquare: We're just getting started...

foursquare: We're just getting started...:

Hey all -

It’s been quite the year for foursquare. Last year at this time, Naveen and I - tired of working around my kitchen table - borrowed a desk from our friends at Curbed.com and Hard Candy Shell. Two months later we brought on our first hire (Harry!) and a few weeks after closed on…

Congrats to everyone @foursquare

Alfred Hitchcock and his kids

Alfred Hitchcock and his kids

"It feels to me as if iPad magazines are at risk of being the next CD-ROMs, the “interactive” element..."

“It feels to me as if iPad magazines are at risk of being the next CD-ROMs, the “interactive” element providing only a passing nod to the rise of truly engaging media formats. (It’s an analogy already made by the TechDirt blog, among others.) Or perhaps they’re more like early days of Flash websites, wherein website owners leapt upon the opportunity to adorn their pages with slick-looking animations, videos and transitions. Only later did they realize that all-Flash websites are both cumbersome and break the core functionality of the Web — namely, the ability to link to individual pieces of content.”

-
Pete Cashmore (via soupsoup)

I’m thinking the latter, and couldn’t that analogy also be made for any closed app platform? They are clunky, but they’re first attempts. There is real potential for traditional publishers, really for the first time ever, to rethink their process. To shift from print first to digital first.

"You would think, wouldn’t you, that for a company that can design and build a cutting-edge mobile..."

“You would think, wouldn’t you, that for a company that can design and build a cutting-edge mobile phone, one that Changes everything. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
”

- Banksy, from Cut It Out (via soupsoup: zaschell) (via kateoplis) (via wreckandsalvage)

Thanks @Alexisea.

Thanks @Alexisea.

"NOAH BRIER’S REACTION may reflect the future of privacy for all of us.
I’m supposed to be working right now, but CBS News posted a story that is such a fucking joke that I had to stop what I was doing to comment on it.

The headline reads, “James Cameron Brainstorms with Gov’t on Spill,” the story tells of how the federal government has enlisted the help of the movie director and some “scientists and other experts.” Cameron has been brought on board to assist with underwater filming.

Cool…makes sense, filming the spill is important and Cameron does have quite a bit of experience running a camera under water. Now CBS, do tell, who are the other experts? I mean, here we are in the middle of the biggest environmental disaster, people are wondering what exactly the government is doing to help and are eagerly waiting to hear anything that can remotely resemble action and positive news. Surely, when your crack journalists learned of a group of experts that had been called together, they rushed to find out the who, what and why each of these individuals were being counted on to fix the problem.

Well…fuck…nope…no you didn’t. No names, no occupations, no nothing except for the Oscar winning, pop-culture, page view earning special effects director who will be running the camera for this “expert” team we don’t know about.

Even worse, this is in your special “Disaster in the Gulf” section, this is something you are putting out there as real news, real journalism. At best, this should be in your entertainment section.

What the headline doesn’t say, but should, is “We don’t think our audience really gives a shit about anything. Look here, you’ve heard of James Cameron, CLICK HERE!”

Shame on you assholes. Stop dropping the ball and do your job.

UPDATE: Okay, so they did include it in their entertainment section. That doesn’t change where they placed it in their Gulf Disaster section, the joke of a headline, and the total lack of real reporting in the article.

Whoa.
