foursquare: We're just getting started... →
Hey all - It’s been quite the year for foursquare. Last year at this time, Naveen and I - tired of working around my kitchen table - borrowed a desk from our friends at Curbed.com and Hard Candy Shell. Two months later we brought on our first hire (Harry!) and a few weeks after closed on… Congrats to everyone @foursquare

– Pete Cashmore (via soupsoup) I’m thinking the latter, and couldn’t that analogy also be made for any closed app platform? They are clunky, but they’re first attempts. There is real potential for traditional publishers, really for the first time ever, to rethink their process. To...

Really CBS News, Really?
I’m supposed to be working right now, but CBS News posted a story that is such a fucking joke that I had to stop what I was doing to comment on it. The headline reads, “James Cameron Brainstorms with Gov’t on Spill,” the story tells of how the federal government has enlisted the help of the movie director and some “scientists and other experts.” Cameron has...

““I hate big acts that just throw an album out against the wall, like ‘BUY IT!...”
– Come party with Lady Gaga - Times Online (via meganwest) I agree with this completely (yes Liz, I just wholeheartedly agreed with Lady Gaga.) The labels should treat the music like free (yes, free) marketing for the tour. Your scarcity business model no longer applies on the physical record side of...

Thoughts on WebM and the future of online video
ericmortensen: jaredklett: It’s a bit of an understatement to say that the unveiling of the WebM project has caused a lot of chatter in the video world. Today I spent some idle cycles thinking about it and its impact after playing with the code and reading the documentation. Looking five years down the road, I believe the majority of Internet video will not be watched within a web browser. It...

Follow bug discovered, remedied.
I never realized that Twitter used Tumblr for their status updates. Cool. twitterstatus: We identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to “force” other users to follow them. We’re now working to rollback all abuse of the bug that took place. Follower/following numbers are currently at 0; we’re aware and this too should shortly be resolved. Update (10:18 AM PST): Of note: protected...

Of shoes and chips and software hacks: Academia... →
For those of you under about 40 years of age, it wasn’t always like this. In the US, it used to be that every year you could expect to be wealthier. Your purchasing power grew over time: you could afford things you couldn’t the year before. Your salary increase every year outpaced inflation. If…

This is Happening
I’m on my fourth run through of LCD Soundsystem’s upcoming album “This is Happening,” and it just clicked for me, suddenly, on the last track “Home.” James Murphy might have done a giant leap of maturity with this one, and found some previously unknowns about himself. Just in time for him to retire the project. Rest easy…maturity doesn’t mean that...
